“Chanting is a way of getting in touch with yourself. It’s an opening of the heart and letting go of the mind and thoughts. It deepens the channel of grace, and it’s a way of being present in the moment.” - Krishna Das

About Krishna Das

Layering traditional Hindu kirtan with instantly accessible melodies and modern instrumentation, Krishna Das has been called yoga’s “rock star.” With a remarkably soulful voice that touches the deepest chord in even the most casual listener, Krishna Das – known to friends, family, and fans as simply KD – has taken the call-and-response chanting out of yoga centers and into concert halls, becoming a worldwide icon and the best-selling chant artist of all time, with over 300,000 records sold. His first studio recording in a decade, “HEART AS WIDE AS THE WORLD” invests KD’s magnetic chanting with an electrifying rock ‘n’ roll sensibility informed by a lifetime of experience and musical love.

KD spent the late ‘60’s traveling across the country as a student of Ram Dass, and in August 1970, he finally made the journey to India, which led him to Ram Dass’ own beloved guru, Neem Karoli Baba, known to most as Maharaj-ji.

Given the name Krishna Das, KD began to chant as part of following the path of Bhakti yoga – the yoga of devotion.

After two and a half years with Maharaj-ji, returned to USA – alas, six months after his return, word came that Maharaj-ji had died.

He took solace in music, finding peace and strength in both his Bhakti yoga practice as well as in such heroes as Ray Charles, Van Morrison, Steely Dan, and Bruce Springsteen (whom he laughingly calls “the Bodhisattva of New Jersey”). KD also co-founded Triloka Records, a California-based label specializing in world music, releasing such artists as Jai Uttal, sarod virtuoso Ali Akbar Khan, and legendary jazz musician/composer Jackie McLean.

Les Leventhal 40-hour Advanced Training

February 20th – 24th | Houston, TX

This 40-Hour Advanced Teacher Training is for intermediate and advanced students and teachers who want to deepen their practice. The training will focus on backbends, hips and twists, arm balances and inversion poses and everything that is required to safely warm up and strengthen the body for these poses. All 40 hours of this training qualify for Yoga Alliance Continuing Education Units.

This 40 hour module will focus on advanced asanas, sequencing and adjusting and is meant to guide the intermediate and advanced practitioner deeper into poses that might not have revealed their full potential or ability to access those deeper places, where students sometimes get stuck. It has also been created for teachers to have many different options to up-level and/or to provide a longer hold in poses, so students can discover and/or uncover the Atman within (the true uncluttered nature of oneself).

Vinyasa yoga is a very creative and expressive style of yoga. When teaching vinyasa classes, you might have similar themes from day to day, but you will never follow the same path from class to class. In other words, you can create a sequence of poses to safely reach one particular peak pose, or you can plan a sequence with an extended hot portion that contains a series of several peak poses. Both will be covered in this training. Equally important to remember when teaching a vinyasa class is to provide modifications for poses, so that students who are injured can also be engaged and included in class and not forgotten or left out while in poses. While teaching advanced asanas it is important to remind students to focus not on the end result or how a pose looks, but rather on the ability of students to maintain their awareness of their breath (Ujjayi) and to enjoy moments of stillness, which can promote strength, grace, healing and Ananda (bliss).

This training will elevate your awareness of you are right now in this moment of time in your life and allow you the freedom to express yourself in a very creative and powerful way that opens your heart to continue your journey of sharing your spirit and this very sacred time of being alive.

The gift of life offers a double boon to the yogi: the invitation to receive and love ourselves just as we are; and the challenge to imagine a self that is more than just the self that was given. Yoga invites us to seize upon the particular opportunity of what it means to be YOU and then create the self of your imagination. You become the person you practice being, and so at any moment you can step into the self you want to become. Put that self into practice!

Sita, Ram, Hanuman | Saturday 9/17 | 1pm – 4:30pm: As one of yoga’s most beloved texts, the Ramayana is the epic tale, of a king, his lady and his best friend as they fight through darkness to rediscover love and light. We’ll honor the highlights of this tale and embody its lessons through specific postures and uplifting chanting.

Introduction to Kirtan | Saturday 9/17 | 6pm – 8pm: Music is an essential component of yoga, and kirtan is the beloved practice of call-and-response chanting where the audience becomes part of the band. As an accomplished musician and recording artist, Alanna leads a jubilant kirtan including sacred Sanskrit mantras as well as uplifting English chants that help to integrate the audience, and offer an experience of down-home bliss.

Art of Adjustments | Sunday 9/18 | 1pm – 4:30pm: Yoga practitioners derive tremendous benefit from effective adjustments. This workshop will explore the principles behind safe and transformative hands-on assists. All types of adjustments will be covered, and an understanding of how to “see” the body and optimize students’ freedom in asanas will be explored.

Les will be teaching 4 workshops throughout the weekend, there’s sure to be something for everyone!

Yoga with Les is a vinyasa/flow yoga practice. Les is one of San Francisco’s most popular and sought after teachers around the world. His classes and podcasts are filled with all the basic technique and alignment cues you will need to get your yoga practice started.
Friday, September 16th – Sunday, September 18th

Even though Hurricane Irene kept David Regelin from teaching at Sanctuary in Nashville in late August, he is ready to rock this weekend with 4 awesome Vesica/Multi-Intenso workshops!

The Vesica Practice is an evolutionary thread of postures supported by technique-oriented instruction. A typical class begins with Surya Namaskar variations. What follows is an innovative sequence of postures that includes foot standing, hand standing, and seated asanas. The pace of the class ranges from fluid and dynamic, to still, measured, and organic.

The Vesica Practice combines techniques from multiple Vinyasa styles and movement modalities with Kundalini and Nevine Michaan yoga. Students learn to be skillful and efficient in movement, and well adjusted in postures. The Vesica Practice employs archetypal alignment principles that reveal the proportion, balance, integration, pattern, and structure inherent within each posture. The goal of the Vesica Practice is to offer a sustainable method of yoga that turns students into teachers, by developing their ability to self adjust, uplift, ground, gain clarity, insight, and become powerful and graceful practitioners.

About Yoga with Les

Yoga with Les is a vinyasa/flow yoga practice. Les is one of San Francisco’s most popular and sought after teachers around the world. His classes and podcasts are filled with all the basic technique and alignment cues you will need to get your yoga practice started. They are also filled with lots of variations and occasional longer sequences to challenge the more seasoned practitioner. The prana (life force) comes from within. So be prepared to sweat and let the rasa (the sap and the juice) flow freely. Les’ studies and ceremonies are steeped in Forrest tradition, having completed Ana Forrest’s teacher training. Les has also assisted Ana’s teacher training and studied many additional hours with her. Also, Les has completed several trainings with Tias Little and has learned much of his alignment and technique cues from Tias, as well as a firm foundation in the 8 Fold path of Buddhism which compliments the asana practice with a sense of grace and elegance that allow you to take classes whatever your yoga experience and whatever traditions you have in your own life. He pays careful attention to weave in the 8 limbs of yoga and keep the traditional styles and intentions of yoga a part of his classes while making great strides into opening a window into our global cultural shift. Les’ yoga will give you an opportunity to heal your heart and laugh, cry, dance and just let go. Some classes flow freely, while others will explore holding postures a bit longer. Many classes have music. Most of all, in Les’ classes, you have an opportunity to modify and do what you need to do in order to take care of your practice and that in learning to take better care of yourself, you can then take better care of those around you and they might then take better care of those around them. “What I’m teaching comes from my studies and how I incorporate that into my body and my spirit. My voice should only be a guide for you to explore your body and spirit and that the voice of your spirit will speak more clearly than anything I would ever have to say” says Les. Les has been featured twice in Yoga Journal magazine and interviewed by Darren Main, author of Yoga and The Path of The Urban Mystic and also by Voice America – Your Life Without Limits by Joe Sarti. Om Shanti – Hari Om Tat Sat.

Hey there Texas Yogis – are you ready to take your practice to the next level?

American Power Yoga’s 200 hour teacher training, led by Kurt Johnsen, begins on September 8th in Dallas, TX! More details below from the studio website:

It is our mission that through a deeper understanding of this practice, the student will experience heightened awareness and more compassion. ~ Kurt Johnsen

In American Power Yoga we use different physical challenges taken from many practices of Yoga, Kung Fu, and Qi Gung, as well as the very latest in Western rehabilitation. This allows us to replicate the mental, emotional, and physical challenges we all face, each day. We condition the body while strengthening the mind.

I strongly believe, by making our mind strong and flexible enough to successfully deal with the ever changing daily challenges, it will lead to a happier and more fulfilling life. I also try to infuse elements of all the branches of classical yoga within the practice, by reminding the practitioners of the importance of taking care of themselves daily (devotion), educating them on the ancient laws of energy and the latest studies on Western medicine (knowledge), urging them to use their strength and compassion to assist others (service), and encouraging them to see each class as a meditation. Because we hold on to the traditional values of this practice, in many ways I consider us, new “traditionalists.” ~ Kurt Johnson, Founder of American Power Yoga.

You can now take your yoga practice to the next level, with American Power Yoga-Intensive Training. This program is designed to excel your understanding of yoga, and thus your understanding of life. You will not only explore the depths of yoga, but most importantly, you will learn how to live yoga. This intense training course is led by APY, founder Kurt Johnsen, and APY Senior Instructor, Jayme Bushmiaer.

The Program

American Power Yoga-Intensive Training is over 200 hours of study designed to help individuals understand the diverse tools, philosophies, and knowledge that APY offers through its yoga practice. The program meets on the weekends and is extremely flexible, built for those with full-time jobs. Unlike many yoga studios, APY intentionally strives to pull from, not only the traditional yoga practices of India, but from as many sources, countries, continents, and cultures, as possible. It is our belief that there are many paths to the same place, and the more knowledge we are equipped with, the better we can connect, understand, and assist the world’s diverse population.

American Power Yoga – Intensive Training includes:

~History and lineage of APY and other traditional yoga practices

~In depth pose study and sequencing

~Unique breath work

Testimonials

“The APY intensive program got me in the best shape mentally and physically of my life.”

“I have taken two other yoga intensives and have learned more in this training than the other two combined.”

“APY’s yoga Intensive Training was one of the best experiences ever. Not only did I grow and condition my body physically, but mentally as well. I increased my self awareness allowing me to have more compassion for others. The physical challenges of yoga are the same as the realities of life. And learning to breathe through these situations is the most important”

“I have paid for a lot of self-development courses, been through some “transformational” work, have read and studied ancient philosophy and “New-Thought” ideas, but the APY Intensive Training encompasses things that directly affect my day-to-day life and living experience. Through this training I have become physically and mentally stronger, healthier, fit and a lot more conscious of what I put into my body and my mind. I am surrounded by more authentic, caring people because I have learned to be more authentic and caring myself”

Summertime is here! What could be better than enjoying some good tunes in the open air? Here is our guide to Summer 2011’s best music festivals:

Outside Lands

Where: San Francisco, CA
When: August 12-14
Who: Phish, Arcade Fire, The Black Keys, The Decemberists, Foster the People, Beirut, Best Coast
Why: The festival has more to offer than just an incredibly diverse and well-put together music lineup. There is an entire food and wine lineup! And in true SF fashion,”every single person attending Outside Lands will participate in decreasing the carbon footprint of the festival by checking out the hottest live acts featured on the solar-powered Panhandle Stage, choosing refillable water bottles over plastic ones, recycling and composting their waste, biking to the festival or picking up local food from our farmers’ market and restaurants.”
How much: $200 for a three-day pass, or $450 for a three-day VIP pass.

Who: Wilco, Thurston Moore, Jamie Lidell, The Handsome Family, The Levon Helm Band, Here We Go Magic
Why: This annual Wilco-curated festival takes place at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, which sits on a 13-acre site in rural Massachusetts and looks like a mighty fine place to have a festival.
Why: 80/35 (which refers to the junction of the two highways leading to Des Moines) started in 2004 as an attempt to bring arts and culture back to Des Moines’ downtown district, and with some big names in the indie-rock world, we hope that they are doing just that.

Where: Chicago, IL
When: July 15-17

Yipeee! Summer is officially here! We are so excited for 3 months of fun times, sunshine, and of course, plenty of yoga! No matter how old or young you may be, summer is always a time to celebrate – there’s so much love and joy in the air! Check out our weekend picks below to find out what’s going on in your neck of the woods this glorious summer kick-off weekend!

Don’t see events listed in your city? Want to submit an event of your own? Email us at Submissions@yoganonymous.org and let us know the deal!

Saturday, May 28th

Detox Yoga with Kurt Johnsen at American Power Yoga in Dallas, TX!

If you want a little more pep in your step, manage weight, clear your skin or re-energize your spirit then it’s time for the APY’s Lifestyle 101: Detox Workshop. We highly recommend a 3o day detox twice a year to assist the bodies natural ability to rid itself of the toxins that surround us all day, every day (fumes, pesticides, junk food, smog, artificial sweeteners, preservatives). Much like how oil changes keep your car running better longer, a detox works exactly the same way as a simple maintenance for long term health. This is not your average detox though where you drink nothing but water and paprika pepper and spend your day in the bathroom. We combine the highest grade natural supplements, nutritional modifications, and yoga that will cleanse the body and the mind. This is not a weight loss program, but losing weight is one of the many side effects!

Other side effects are:

• decrease in allergies
• increase in energy
• clearer skin
• improved digestion
• and the peace of mind that they’re doing something great for your body for years to come!

Our program includes:

• 30 days of unlimited yoga at APY
• the highest quality nutritional supplements
• Daily Movements to work the lymph system (or bodies built in detox system)
• eliminating problematic foods and daily toxic products
• 2 group meetings with TANITA testing (measures your fat to muscle ratio)
• weekly coaching

Created with our friends at smartwater, we’ve spent months creating the perfect outdoor yoga events in your favorite city parks, featuring yoga instruction by top teachers, live music, and great community vibe. Though the events are free with registration, we’re also launching a Facebook app called the smartlife that will help raise money for Wanderlust’s official charity partner, Off The Mat Into The World , all while you improve your health and the community around you. Good stuff? We think so — read more below.

With all these great events, we figured it was time to explain the different Wanderlust experiences we’re offering in 2011: two festivals (CA and VT), seven Yoga In The City events, one hotel-based event (Wanderlust at the Standard), one event in a legendary music venue (Wanderlust at the Fillmore), and two events with our friends at Anusara, the Anusara Grand Circle and the Anusara Inspired Gathering. While each event offers a Wanderlust-sized dose of yogic goodness, they were custom designed to tickle your fancy in different ways. Happy wandering!

Wanderlust has teamed up with smartwater to take the Wanderlust experience on the road with a new series of events called Wanderlust Yoga In The City. Kicking off in Civic Space Park in Phoenix, AZ on May 3, Wanderlust Yoga in the City will hit 7 cities nationally to celebrate the culture of modern yoga. The events are free with registration and include yoga instruction by each city’s top teachers and live music, all in a beautiful outdoor setting. The website for YITC Phoenix is live now; registration and event websites for the other YITC events will launch approximately a month before each event.

After you register for Yoga In The City, you’ll be given the opportunity to participate in thesmartlife. What is the smartlife, you ask? It’s two things: a Facebook app that leads you through a series of goals benefitting your health, the community and the environment. It’s also a great way to raise money for charity. You can ask your friends and family to sponsor your goals, which include things like drinking more water, cutting back on alcohol, donating to a charity, and of course doing more yoga. All of the money raised will be donated to our official charity sponsor, Off The Mat Into The World. The top 5 fundraisers will receive a special shout out at Wanderlust Yoga in the City as well as an amazing prize pack from our sponsors.
