Whether you are a member of a 12 step recovery program or not, most of us are looking to recover or heal from something in our lives – patterns of behavior we are looking to change or relationships that keep going in a direction that prevent us from giving and receiving the love and intimacy that we truly desire.

We will explore patterns that lead to destructive behavior and how distractions such as drugs, alcohol, food, smoking, sex and shopping separate us from family and friends. We will discuss addictions to drama, adrenaline and focusing on other people’s problems (co-dependency). We will review the 12 steps of recovery to see some samskaras (old habits), some which we might not even be aware of or that they compromise our self esteem or step over the boundaries of others.

To open the hips, we begin by cultivating awareness of the challenges we hold in our hips and pelvic region. We can begin to relax and strengthen the quads, the inner and outer muscles of the thighs and stretch the hamstrings. While unlocking this area of our bodies we will also free the spine with twists which can infuse the body with vitality and well being and release enormous amounts of tension. Twists are associated with toning and rejuvenating the abdominal and pelvic regions. When these regions are engaged, blood flow naturally increases and toxins are released – a natural internal massage. Relaxing and strengthening these areas releases lower back tension and frees limitation in the neck and shoulders.

Learn to express the evolution of asana in relationship to the key actions that ease the natural unfolding from simple to complex offerings. The method comes through the embodied conversation of one family of yoga to another and the leveraging of mindful progression in vibratory resonance to the body’s energetic alignment. This may be the highest discussion you have held in your strength, grace and attention to the manner in which one posture naturally grows into its more unfolded, bound, or integrated form. Embody and share the unfolding of yoga!

Friday, January 13th | 8pm – 10pm

Layering traditional Hindu kirtan with instantly accessible melodies and modern instrumentation, Krishna Das has been called yoga’s “rock star.” With a remarkably soulful voice that touches the deepest chord in even the most casual listener, Krishna Das – known to friends, family, and fans as simply KD – has taken the call-and-response chanting out of yoga centers and into concert halls, becoming a worldwide icon and the best-selling chant artist of all time, with over 300,000 records sold. His first studio recording in a decade, Heart As Wide As The World invests KD’s magnetic chanting with an electrifying rock ‘n’ roll sensibility informed by a lifetime of experience and musical love.

Chanting is a way of getting in touch with yourself. It’s an opening of the heart and letting go of the mind and thoughts. It deepens the channel of grace, and it’s a way of being present in the moment.” -Krishna Das

The Grateful Dead Yoga Hour w/ Dave Romanelli

Friday, January 13th | 5:30pm - 7pm

It’s been 16 years since the passing of Jerry Garcia and the subsequent break-up of the Grateful Dead. Why not bring them back for an evening of flowing vinyasa yoga set to some of the great musical moments in Grateful Dead history? Former Deadhead David Romanelli will lead the evening. You’ll see how a little 1960s psychedelia can further your practice and take you deeper into your backbends, twists, and folds. If you miss Jerry, and it’s been way too long since your last long, strange trip . . .

“When thinking of a new offering for YJSF, I thought about one thing that so many yogis I know have in common…a love for the Grateful Dead.
Ashley teaches workshops at the Spa Montage one weekend a month in their beautiful studio which overlooks the ocean. This past weekend, I had the pleasure of attending Ashley’s Saturday morning workshop and then indulging in the plethora of amenities the Spa has to offer – it was, in a word, perfect. The drive from Los Angeles took me only an hour, which is about the distance from San Diego as well, making it an easy day trip for residents of both cities. The spa even comes with a built in babysitter – their PAINTBOX program allows you to drop your kids off while you go to class, then enjoy the day at the Montage with the whole family! The cost for full day access to yoga and spa is only $65 – a fantastic deal! However, if you feel like making a weekend out of it, the Montage is an incredibly gorgeous resort and I would highly recommend staying there as long as possible.

Tari Prinster doesn’t look like a woman who would let anything stand in her way.

She has a shock of bright red air, a lithe and strong body with killer arms, and broad smile that brightens any room. But 11 years ago, Tari was sidelined, with Stage 3 Invasive Ductal Carcinoma, an invasive breast cancer.

“No matter what kind or stage, cancer steals the breath, clouds the brain, and weakens the body.,” Tari says. “The word cancer pried loose my hold on life and time seemed to stop.” And stop it did… seven months of treatment including three surgeries, chemo and radiation, not to mention unthinkable decisions for herself, her husband and children. There were also side effects, medications, expenses, insurance forms, phone calls, and empty hours waiting for test results—all floating past like debris on a sea of uncertainty and anxiety. ” My life stopped really, until I took the next breath as a cancer survivor.,” she says. “Since then, nothing has been the same.”

Nothing has been the same for Tari, or, thankfully, for other women living with cancer whose lives Tari has touched. Two weeks after her last surgery she was given her doctor’s permission to return to yoga. Before her cancer she had been into yoga for “vanity,” the workout and how it made her look. After cancer it was totally different. ”What interested me was not what I could not do but what I could do,” Tari says.

“I discovered things that I would have missed pre cancer. I learned to appreciate the ability to breathe. I could not take a really deep breath expanding the ribs, stretching the incisions around the surgical staples. But I was breathing mindfully, enjoying it—and I was doing my yoga. The idea of active, intentional rest was new to me, an opportunity to stop trying to be so athletic and to appreciate simple relaxation. ”

During seven months of chemotherapy, Tari’s daily practice varied in frequency, duration and intensity as the challenges of her recovery unfolded. Her yoga practice became her personal tool for survival. And with that realization Tari also discovered her life’s purpose, to create a yoga class for women living with cancer who also wanted to move, to heal and to find community.

In 2003, Tari began teaching her Yoga for Cancer Survivors” class at OM Yoga. The class started with 2-4 women dropping by every week and quickly grew to classes of 20 and 30. A second weekday class was added, and Tari realized she needed more teachers to cover the demand. So in 2005, she began to offer Teacher Trainings at OM. These teacher trainings were the first specifically designed to address the needs of cancer survivors offered in New York City. The program has trained over 400 yoga teachers from all over the world. The weekly classes touch the lives of as many as 40 women a week ranging in ages from 24 to 80. Women with other cancers like, lung, pancreatic, brain and even eye cancers have used the classes to find a way back to feeling normal.

I recently had the opportunity to sit down with Tari, check out our interview below:

YOGANONYMOUS:Why is yoga helpful for people living with cancer?

Tari Prinster: “Yoga makes you stronger in mind and body; gives courage, hope and confidence; breaks down barriers of isolation and stigma; and can be a great way to relax.

But not to be underestimated is the connection to others. When you are told you have cancer, often it feels like you are alone. You feel stigmatized because every one treats you differently. Yoga creates community. Knowing you are not alone in your challenge is a tool to finding courage and hope.”

YOGANONYMOUS: Tell me about your class at OM. What is the community like? Describe the diversity of ages, recovery, types of cancer, etc.

TP: “My students come with curiosity, hope and a willingness to be partners in a joint exploration. They also come with fear, doubts and questions about both cancer and yoga. Cancer is scary. Chemo is scary. Even yoga can be frightening to some people. We can take some of that mystery out with knowledge and wisdom, through breathing, movement and community. “

YOGANONYMOUS: So your students talk about cancer?

TP: “Absolutely! Again, that sense of community is hugely important to what we do. When I started looking into yoga for cancer survivors, I wondered why yoga teachers never use the word cancer. Instead, they emphasized, “relax” and “feel peaceful.” Ironically, these pleasant words sent my mind racing into thinking about dying. It was not healing to avoid the reason the class was offered, nor was it spiritual.

I find my students are comforted by the exchange of questions we have when I first meet them as to what kind of cancer they have, how long, what treatments, side effects and how is it going in their recovery. The relief that I am not afraid to acknowledge their illness is a relief akin to spiritual. When the class includes an explanation of how yoga deep breathing will assist in cleansing the immune system, and why that is important to lower the risk of cancer reoccurrence, the response is a smile with each inhale.

At the end of class the glow on each woman’s face is the goal of yoga. Not some kind of nirvana, nor profound enlightenment, or even heightened awareness. But simple contentment in the sheath of Anandmayakosha, the Bliss Factor that yoga offers to aid healing. This is yoga’s gift to them and to me.

YOGANONYMOUS: Can anyone teach yoga to cancer patients?

TP: Yoga for cancer patients is a specialization. When I was going thru treatments, I found that there were few yoga teachers who understood what my needs and desires were as a patient. I went to classes that were designed basically as a series of restorative poses. Although this was lovely and relaxing, it was not satisfying nor inspiring.

I was surprised, and upset, that many yoga classes were offered by teachers without any supervised training, knowledge of cancer and Western treatments, and no personal experience with cancer. My feelings about the preparedness of yoga teachers beyond the 200-hr training programs are supported by the words of BKS Iyengar in Light on Life. ‘Is it an act of loving-kindness to assume you know the needs of those you come to you for help?’

YOGANONYMOUS: So how do the classes differ from regular classes? What can a student expect?

TP: I created the program following OM’s vinyasa and pose sequence structure with modifications for these students. But is it infused with lots of discussion of the specific benefits of poses relative to cancer.

Cancer survivors come with high expectations of yoga. Sometimes they come bring fears and doubts sometimes planted by warnings from Western doctors. But mostly they come with curiosity and a desire to know how and why yoga will help them be healthy and stay cancer-free. They come to yoga as people wanting again to feel whole and normal, not like cancer survivors. They bring life challenges, not just cancer challenges. These expectations are not any different than those of regular students.

Yoga teachers are trained to teach to a diverse yet general population. However, awareness of the limitations imposed by surgeries, chemotherapy and the many life-long side effects and vulnerabilities of cancer treatments and reconstruction are not covered in most yoga teachers training.

The difference in teaching yoga to cancer survivors is that the risks are higher and a teacher should know what they are.

Survivors expect teachers to understand the effects of cancer treatments on the body, what poses have most benefits, and what poses can be potentially harmful. When offering a class for cancer survivors, a teacher is saying, “I am responsible. I know what yoga is best for you and I will protect you from further discomfort, injury plus calm your doubts or fears.” That takes a different set of skills and a knowledge vase that is different from traditional trainings.

YOGANONYMOUS: Aside from OM, where can interested students and potential teachers find you?

TP: Ongoing classes at OM are my corner stone. But I travel to teach workshops and teacher trainings: In November at Yoga Kula San Francisco two events including a teacher training (attached), Kripalu in February (see link) and Yoga Journal Conference in April, NYC (see link) . My next teacher training at OM yoga is May10-14 (www.omyoga.com)

YOGANONYMOUS: What is your dream for the future?

TP: My dream is that Western medical professionals and hospitals will recognize that yoga taught by a specially trained and specifically certified yoga teachers is the last prescription a cancer patient/survivor needs. Beyond all the treatments, when all that is over and they send the cancer patient/survivor home, there is something else they can prescribe. Yoga for life, Yoga for all the life-long side effects that will be there no matter if the cancer is not.

YOGANONYMOUS: Why do you love what you do?

Maya Angeleo said, “I have learned that people forget what you say, forget what you did, but never forget how you made them feel.” My goal is to help cancer patients feel empowered, hopeful and not alone. I love what I do –teaching yoga to survivors– because it gives me a way to do all those things. And it gives me the same.

Hips & Twists: Liberate Your Hips, Free Your Spine

Saturday, December 3rd | 1:15pm – 4:15pm

A vinyasa workshop for ALL levels

The Yoga Sutras & Seated Meditation | 10/7 | 7pm – 8:30pm: This workshop is designed to facilitate a grounded understanding of some of the key philosophical concepts of classical yoga. We will apply the teachings to contemporary existence and then employ them by sitting together. Simple but potent meditation techniques will be offered for exploration in a group setting.

Arm Balancing w/ Alignment | 10/8 | 9am – 11am: Build the ability to playfully defy gravity by exploring simple yet potent alignment techniques. This intermediate level workshop will work to forge an understanding of the key actions which lay the foundation for success in inversions. These sometimes daunting poses become much more manageable with an awareness of some uncomplicated structural systems in the body.

Structural Integrity in Asana | 10/8 | 2pm – 4pm: In this all levels alignment intensive asana workshop we shine a light on the dynamics of physical action in the body. Using the hatha and vinyasa yoga systems we will explore how engaging the body in opposition allows for an intuitive sense of rooted growth and grounded expression. Just as how in erecting a structure there must be dynamic tension and support, so the body thrives on an intelligent intermingling of expansion and contraction.

This Master Series will explore the energetic system that underlie the whole human experience. This system referred to as the subtle body can easily be accessed by the practice of yoga. The subtle body is composed of a chief theory that we often eliminate from our physical practices. These practices are composed of nadis, chakras and bandhas. Nadis are similar to meridians used in acupuncture and are often described as tubes or lines that stretch out in a sheath beneath the body. Chakras are plexuses within the body where these lines meet. Bandha is a methodology of directing the energy pooled in the chakra. Hatha Yoga, comprised of a series of texts and based on a classical theory called shadanga, places a chief emphasis on mastery of the body. By mastery of this science, which includes flexibility, strength, and access to more postures, the body is made light, healthy and steady and able to achieve the first stage of yoga.
