It’s about that time of year, when all I can think about is getting away.

Which is why I have compiled a list of my 6 favorite yoga retreat destinations below, to help you in your search for the perfect escape. Each one of these retreats offers a distinctive experience with it’s own unique focus. Whether you are looking to get involved in the local community or party in between poses you can do so all while delving deeper into your own personal practice.

1. South Africa Yoga

Up and coming on the international circuit, this magical hideaway combines top-level Yoga instruction and nutritional excellence (all vegetarian, all included) with a distinct African experience while supporting local communities. Outside of the 3 hour Vinyasa classes per day which combine Asana, Pranayama, Meditation, and Savasana, one can hike amidst spectacular beauty and natural surroundings, amazing wildlife and rock art, plus have the opportunity to volunteer at a local orphanage incorporating Seva into your retreat. This 766 acre secluded farm built in 1872 is in the Eastern Free State 4 hours from Johannesburg and is the ultimate in peace and serenity…plus there’s a pool! www.southafricayoga.com

2. Samana Chakra, Mancora, Peru

In addition to the Yoga, the appeal of Samana Chakra is it’s location – the far North of Peru right on the warm waters of the Pacific Ocean. Even though the Humbolt Current brings cool water up from the South, it just so happens to start flowing West not far from Mancora, allowing the warm Equatorial Current to create the perfect water temperature for swimming, as well as a left point break for surfing and windy afternoons for kitesurfing! Samana Chakra is situated literally on the beach and has 12 bungalows to host individual guests or group retreats. The Yoga Shala is stunning with an elaborate thatched roof and stucco walls, but open windows and sliding glass doors to allow just enough ocean breeze to roll through. With 90-minute classes 6 days per week, a pool, delectable Peruvian cuisine, and enough activities to last a lifetime you won’t want to leave! www.samanachakra.com

3. Ibiza Yoga, Spain

I know, I know…Yoga in the party capital of Europe? That’s right! While Ibiza boasts some of the best beaches and parties in the world, there’s also another side to this hippy haven – especially in the Northern part of the Island where it’s more quiet, relaxed & subdued. Ibiza Yoga has been running affordable retreats for over 11 years. An excellent vegetarian meal per day is included giving you a chance to savor local cuisine as well as 3 hour classes each day. Another major draw is the location – a 5 minute walk from sparkling Benniras Beach where there are drummers every night at sunset and a beach party every Sunday complete with a full drum circle and fire dancers! For those still looking for more action, fabulous restaurants and clubs are just a short cab ride away; therefore combining the best of both worlds. www.ibizayoga.com

4. The Hill That Breathes, Urbino, Italy

Recently named Best European Retreat by Natural Health magazine THTB is also regarded as the most irreverent retreat by The Guardian. With alternative holidays called “F**K it Weeks” and practice commencing in a geodesic dome it’s definitely a unique and distinctive experience. They advertise “Peace & Pizza” and don’t take themselves too seriously although their instructors are world famous. The wine flows as much as the Vinyasa. After all this is Italy! Programs range from straight up Hatha & Vinyasa Yoga twice a day to Tai Chi and detox weeks. There’s even a 10-day writing retreat equipped with a professional writing coach. www.thehillthatbreathes.com

5. Samahita Yoga Thailand, Koh Samui

With a more serious approach this center for classical Yoga and Holistic health offers retreats as well as 200 & 500-hour teacher trainings (the only one in Thailand). Since 2003 this hidden gem is extremely well respected in the Yoga community as Paul Dallaghan himself is world-class teacher. They also host many famous Ashtanga practitioners like Kino MacGregor, Richard Freeman and Ron Reid all who studied with the late Sri Patthabi Jois. Retreats range from Ashtanga to Ayurveda, anatomy and health & wellness. Right on the beach surrounded by lush gardens, this is the place to get centered in Asia. www.yoga-thailand.com

6. Purple Valley Yoga, Goa, India

located in the “Motherland.” Purple Valley is situated on the Arabian Sea in Assagoa, North Goa at Anjuna Beach. An Ashtanga Yoga retreat hosting the likes of Chuck Miller, the fabulous Kino, Mark Darby, and Michael Gannon…enough said! http://www.yogagoa.com

The Gift Inside the Giving | A Yogi in India

“ I step out beyond the unknown to claim the true riches of my potential” – Alan Cohen

If I were to die today and God asked me three things that truly altered my perception of life, the answer would be simple…. The birth of my son, the death of my father, and my trips I spent in India with my teacher and alone. Through each experience, although radically different from the next, they are all part of one huge tapestry with its thematic content stitched boldly into the fabric: AN AWAKENING. Each did and continues to make me stretch myself in ways that have made me grow, discover more intimately the true meaning of life, and the vast depth of our potentiality. To me, that’s yoga.

I often consider during those strong times in my life, the familiar adage, ‘some people go through life with all its colors, while others grow through life’. As Erich Fromm puts it so plainly, “Man’s main task is to give birth to himself, to become what he potentially is.” I’m really interested in that. So, perhaps aside from being a sincere yogi to the best of my capacity for almost two decades, a teacher sharing its wisdom traditions and yogic knowledge since the early nineties, and a self-realization seeker at my core, it is no mistake India has always called to me. The practice of my life led me there organically. Just like a child making its way home from school, eventually, I knew I’d get there. Each journey to this land has been as unambiguous as the next, with its teachings clear, its relevance not to be debated, and the grace tucked away in my heart to feed my life in ways beyond explanation.

There are places in the world that are incredibly conducive to ones’ personal awakening. India is one of those places for me. There are places in India, where the rush and hurry of life has not yet set in, and time slows down exponentially. It is in those moments, mostly unfamiliar to many of us living in a maniac society, where a deep sense of connection happens. That can really change a person. I could tell you of the many things that took place along my travels. I could share with you the miracles of spontaneous healing that occurred in my body after a terrible fall, and the adventures that challenged my will beyond measure. But, those would take second fiddle to one particular story I have in mind. It is a simple story, so simple in fact that unless you were there, you may find it stacks up quite short on the literary scale of climatic pay-off – devoid of drama, sensationalism, or a well-delievered punchline. But, it’s a moment I will always remember.

It was 2007, and I was on retreat for twenty one days at my Guru’s ashram, the beloved YogiRaj Gurunath, on the holy day of Shivrahtri. This is the day where thousands of children from surrounding villages take a day off from school to come to the ashram to get fed a delicious meal, be given t-shirts and other gifts, and meditate with a master. It’s an incredible happening. Most of the children arrive in their best outfits, which is their school uniform, and many without a simple pair of shoes. Let me just say, they are some of the happiest children I have ever met. As I was walking around passing out dahl with a sturdy hand upon their plates, a little nine year old girl, with torn clothes, barefoot, and flies cowering over her soiled head, caught my attention. She was gleaming at me as she said ‘hello’ looking up from the dirt floor. She smiled at me in a way that was so present, so available, so inviting, I just stopped. I actually almost feel over at the level of presence this little girl met me with in an instant. As corny as it may sound, I felt she saw right into my soul. I felt it. As I bent down to say hello and meet this shining face full of love and happiness., she spoke three words that hit me right at the heart. “You,” she said, taking her time, food gathered in her hands, waiting to be eaten, “are very beauuuutiful.”

She made me cry. On the spot. It was useless to hold back and she just watched smiling without a worry or concern. I don’t think I’d ever felt the power of words more, especially when they are spoken with such purity from an unobstructed heart. What was so astonishing was not so much in the words she said, but that someone so unexpected took the time to notice. Even this child with so little to speak of in terms of the basic necessities of life, demonstrates our most essential need that far outweighs food and water. Love. The irony was she was the one whose natural beauty both in features and essence was undeniable.

It made me think how disconnected I’d become and how we, many of us, make ourselves so busy that we can’t even see what’s in front of us. It made me think of how little I knew of what true gratitude was and how much energy I’d wasted on not feeling like I had enough. To know gratitude so well, so sensorially in our bones to where we can really make it a part of us, is where the grace lies. Afterall, grace and gratitude come from the same latin root word, gratia.

What is the purpose of life? Where does happiness really live? It lives in its giving. It is there, where I realized honestly how beautiful I was. That used to be something really hard to say. But the beautiful that little girl spoke of was something I believe we all seek to connect to and celebrate. That is where the joy is. When I look into the eyes of my nineteen-month old son, I see the eyes of that little girl and all those thousands of children from that day. I have her picture in a frame, her eyes gleaming, bringing that cup of food to her mouth with a winning smile. For that moment, and so much more, I am filled with gratitude. To my sweet Jyoti, I thank you.

“You can’t hear much at 40 kilometers an hour.” I think to myself.

Actually I can hear a lot but of mainly one thing, the wind roaring around my exposed head. Upon second thought I can actually hear two things; the whine of the small engine occasionally cuts through the roar of the wind. I am guessing the speed because my speedometer currently reads zero. I know this is obviously wildly inaccurate given the beauty that blurs around me. Besides guessing my speed I am also guessing the speed limit. They have tended to many things here on this remote island off Sriracha Thailand however speed limit signs are not one of them.

“Ah, this is yoga” I declare in my head” Yes, one could argue as soon as that voice started up, I had stopped practicing yoga however what do they call it…poetic license? Anyway, “I am connected, to this moving moment” I thought. I had to be. The winding road, two side walks put together actually, had a vast array of various inclines and declines which are attached to S turns that seemed to cling to the edge of this volcanic island. To my left are some large grey stones with deep etchings. To my right, a dreamy emerald green sea. “This is yoga” again rang out and I begin to feel, really feel the bike, the wind, the road, the sun, and the smiles of the Thai children I pass.

As I train teachers I challenge them to practice yoga as they drive home. I always get the same responses back. Laughter and then remarks of the danger involved. They couldn’t be more wrong. Yoga is awareness and connection. On most streets I would say the lack of awareness and connection is the problem. Your yoga practice is most important when the safety and health of yourself and others are involved.

I sit up straighter and throttle up a little into a turn. In the same moment a bus comes into view directly ahead of me. I think about it being a small bus and how all things down here on Koh Si Chang seem a little smaller, but still my scooter is no match. In a millisecond I realize my mistake and cut my scooter sharply to the right, avoiding the bumper of the bus by (I like to think) at least a few inches. Straightening out I start to laugh; Lesson for the day: Awareness of surroundings can only serve you after you are aware of which side of the street people drive on in the country you are in!

The following was written by NYC-based yoga teacher, Alanna Kaivalya...

Alanna is in Ubud, Bali where she is currently contributing to Radiantly Alive’s teacher training and having a general good time. Learn more about her adventures below!

As I sit at a beautiful cafe in Bali overlooking a lush ravine with a river flowing down below I can’t help but think to myself, “How did I get here?” This is a question I’m actually often asked by yoga students while on the road, “How did you get to do what you do now.” You’d think after 6 years and several loops around the world that I’d have a fast and savvy answer for inquiring minds.

But, here’s the simple truth. I have no idea. The first stamp in my passport was in 2005 to Australia where I taught yoga for a month. It’s been pretty much non-stop since then and all I can really say is that it’s a dream come true. When I began as a yoga instructor over a decade ago, I knew from the get-go that somehow I’d have to turn into a traveling yoga show, otherwise it was gonna be a no-go for me.

These days, I spend about 50% of my time on the road, which leaves me the other half to spend enjoying my time in my home base – New York… in my estimation the greatest city on the planet. It’s okay if you don’t agree with that sentiment, but I’d be happy to debate you until I’m blue in the face! While on the road, I generally make my way to points West all over America and often hop over so far west that I end up in what is often considered “the far east” in places like India, China, and probably my favorite place, Bali.

Bali is an extraordinary island. Long before the Eat, Pray, Love crowd started flocking to discover it’s charm, people have been eating, praying and loving here like crazy. Despite slightly over-commercialized hotspots like Kuta and Ubud (I love both places intensely, by the way) it also has small villages filled with people who spend 25% of their day in prayer. First time I landed on this island in 2008, I could feel the subtle shift in the quality of the air here, which is filled with incense, prayer and ritual. The moment I landed, I knew it was a place I could get used to, and also a place where the yoga practices I’d come to love have a real life of their own.

This is my fifth time in Bali and I’m starting to feel as if it’s my second home. My friend, Nyoman, has brought me to his home and shown me how to pray. He emails me periodically before I come to find out if the things I’ve asked the healer for have come to fruition (they have by the way, all of them). This time around, he’s taken me to the largest temple on Bali to pray to the goddess and arranged for me to see a famous Balinesian priest who told me about my life and my future. I’m supposed to live to be 90 years old. Awesome.

I try to do my best to engage in all these things not as a tourist, but as a full participant. Despite my blonde hair, blue eyes and shockingly white skin (we haven’t seen the sun in New York in 6 months), I sit on concrete floors and hold flowers up with prayer hands to my forehead. I loved the rituals of yoga before I came to Bali, but now that I’m here, it feels like these rituals have come to life right before my eyes and heart.

Now, I don’t want to get all cheese-balled out and metaphysical with this little travelog. Not my style. But, at some point all the “doing” of yoga has to become the “living” of yoga, and it’s supremely easy to do in a place like Bali where the locals have been telling the tale of the Ramayana through dance, chant and fire for centuries. Sure, the island has it’s typical island charms like other fabulous places. It has coconuts, palm trees, sandy beaches, fancy food, lots of sun and jungly spots. What it offers that other places don’t, however, is this living, breathing opportunity to make real the practices and rituals we engage in as yogis. People laugh and smile with an impeccable kindness and generosity. They raise their hands in prayer as they say hello. They speak of things in terms of the gods and goddesses we have printed on our yoga tops or tattooed on our skin.

Bali makes the esoteric personal and gives me a living, breathing context of my lifestyle and work. And, I love context. Just ask students who come to my classes – I’m a huge fan of finding a framework upon which to lay our experiences. No place on the planet, including India (gasp!) has done this for me like Bali has. For example, to get back to the retreat center I’m staying at, I have to take a right at the big statue of Arjuna wielding a bow standing on horseback. Interestingly, I just taught about the Bhagavad Gita today to a group of students who listened in rapt attention at the tribulations of this mighty warrior they’d recognized in that statue.

But wait, this is a travelog! Shouldn’t I be telling you about all the secret hidden hotspots and best places to have Gado Gado – a favorite Balinesian salad? I can tell you all that, for sure. Though, the only hotspot that truly interests me is the located in the center of my own chest. While I may call New York home, my spirit feels like it comes home every time I land in this place. I hope that someday you’ll experience this same kind of homecoming wherever your journeys may take you… in the meantime, I’ll give you a namaste-back guarantee that you can find it here.

Alanna is currently writing from Ubud, Bali, where clearly, she loves it. She’s looking forward to returning home in June to New York, her dog, Roxy, and her awesome Queens apartment.

This Holiday Season, I’ve had a lot to be thankful for–

Most notably my 3-week adventure through New Zealand. I spent the first two weeks exploring the South Island in a campervan with a fellow American, and the last week I borrowed a friend’s family Subaru to go on a solo road trip along the east coast of the North Island. Throughout my delectable journey, I went skydiving and bungee jumping in Queenstown, boating through the Milford Sound and the Bay of Islands, hiking on the Franz Josef Glacier, swimming with dolphins in Kaikoura, practiced yoga on the banks of Lake Wanaka, camped by the sea, and drove on the wrong side of the road–just to name a handful of mind-blowing activities this tiny country has to offer. From my travels, I have deduced that New Zealand is the closest to perfect a country can get. Allow me to elaborate.

The Scenery is Absurdly Beautiful

Tropical palm trees loom before snow peaked Alps. Motionless lakes reflect lush green mountains. Rolling, sheep-dotted hills give way to bursts of sapphire, oceans bluer than bliss. Exotic birds abound, and orchards stretch as far as the eye can see. There is not a human in sight. Where the hell are we? My travel partner and I wondered as we passed from one picturesque vision to the next. Were we beholding the rocky coasts of Vancouver? The vineyards of the Argentine countryside? The manicured flora and fauna of Japan? No, there is only one place on Earth that magnificent in its assorted, uninterrupted stream of natural beauty, and that place is undoubtedly the South Island of New Zealand. The end of the earth. Every turn in the road provided another unprecedented, unparalleled moment of awe. All the travelers I encountered carried the same slack-jawed, wide-eyed expression on their faces, sometimes with tears pooling in their unbelieving eyes. Everyone was tripping on natural beauty.

Kiwis are Awesome

I accredit the awesomeness of New Zealanders (who charmingly refer to themselves as Kiwis, after their national bird) to the fact that a country of only 4 million people has the luxury of managing to truly take care of its people. All the Kiwis I spent time with—from host families to sheep shearers to gas station attendants—were humble, friendly, and genuine by nature. Honestly, everyone was just…nice! Fancy that! There was one moment in particular when New Zealand’s people managed to move me even more than its stunning scenery. While I was waiting to catch a flight from Christchurch to Auckland, an announcement came on asking everyone to stop what they were doing and gather in the middle of the airport to honor the men who died in the recent mining accident by standing together for two minutes of silence; every single person in the airport did just that. Tarmac workers, airline employees, janitors, travelers—everyone stopped. Everybody cared! To a jaded American, it seemed impossibly altruistic. Truth is, Kiwis love their country. They know how lucky they are to have what they have. On more than one occasion, I was asked by a local to keep New Zealand a secret. This request was usually accompanied by a wink. Unfortunately for the Kiwis, I’m a writer with a big mouth.

NZ Respects it’s Indigenous People

I’m ashamed of the way we treat Native Americans, especially after seeing the way the Maori are regarded in New Zealand. Every country has problems when it comes to maintaining relations with its native people, but New Zealand acknowledges and addresses these problems. For example, most road signs throughout the country are written in both English and Maori; most cities have retained their Maori names; and Maoris have seats in the national government. In other words, the indigenous people of New Zealand have a voice. Furthermore, their culture and customs have been preserved, and white children are raised to respect and honor the Maori and their traditions.

I was fortunate to meet a Maori couple, Jack and Maria, when I got lost one day trying to find a beach in the Coromandel Peninsula. They welcomed me into their home, introduced me to their families, and included me in a late night jam session with their friends. They fed me a traditional Maori meal called a “boil-up,” and I ate that pork with my hands and sucked the bones dry right along with them—never mind that I’m a vegetarian. Every chance she got, Maria taught me Maori words and shared her peoples’ fascinating traditions. For example, when collecting food from the ocean, it is customary to begin by praying to the sea god, then sacrificing the first catch by releasing it back into the sea, and, most importantly, taking only what is needed. Maria also told me all about her family and her history and how connected she feels to her ancestors and to New Zealand, which the Maori call Aotearoa. She and Jack live in an old caravan converted into a shack, on farmland on a cliff overlooking the sea. They grow their own vegetables and dive for seafood at the beach down below. They feel thankful for the abundance that the ocean provides, and their right to gather abalone and sea urchin is protected by law. In a final act of warmth and hospitality, Maria asked me to name her puppy. I’ve never felt more honored.

NZ Honors the Environment

While Americans generally regard RV parks as trashy joints, I gathered a lot about New Zealand’s self-respect by spending time in just those very places. It was at RV parks that I began to notice the multitude of recycle bins and encouraging signs, such as, “Good Kiwis Recycle.” It was at RV parks that I was forced to conserve water by taking timed showers limited to 6 minutes. It was at an RV park that I saw a lovely little garden accompanied by a sign that said, “Herbs. Please pick me!” I mean, how charming can you get in your enforcement of eco-friendliness? Hiking trails provide hoses for people to wash the soles of their shoes so as not to spread destructive seeds, and signs peppering the trails require dogs to be kept under control so as to protect the elusive kiwi bird. Exotic wiry contraptions are commonly found in people’s backyards–giant hangers upon which to hang your clothes to dry. They don’t usually use their dryers because apparently dryers use a lot of energy. I didn’t give it much thought before because that’s just the way we do it in the United States. My Kiwi friends don’t understand our frivolity, and I see where they’re coming from… People actually WAIT for their clothes to air dry? In the name of the environment? Maybe we could take a few tips from the Kiwis…

NZ Has a Public Healthcare System

On my second day in New Zealand, I sprained my ankle–and not by jumping off a bridge or out of an airplane. No, I sprained my ankle by clumsily rolling over it on the dance floor at 2 am. When I woke up in the morning and saw that it was swollen like a golf ball, I was furious with myself and worried that I wouldn’t be able to do all the hiking I had planned to do. I figured that since I had travel insurance I should go see a doctor. How would I find one? I wondered. Luckily for me, New Zealand rocks. In the tiny outdoor mall in Queenstown, I saw a big yellow sign that said, “Medical Clinic” with an arrow pointing directly towards a building. I walked into a clean lobby, made an appointment for that very afternoon, saw the doctor, and received both attentive treatment and a wrap for my ankle—all for FREE, with friendly service. This was all possible, of course, because New Zealand has a public healthcare system funded by general taxation, and treatments are often free. The helpful secretary laughed good-naturedly when I showered her with gratitude. I explained to her that I was utterly shocked because I’m from the United States where nothing comes free. She cocked her head (out of confusion or pity, I wasn’t sure) and nodded at me understandingly.

Dolphins are Everywhere

Something about New Zealand attracts dolphins. It is beyond magical. They love to hang out in bays and beaches all over the country. I had the good fortune to experience their presence on four separate occasions, all in the open sea. On one very special occasion just beyond the charming, craggy seaside town of Kaikoura, Dusky dolphins swam in spirited circles around my wetsuit-covered body as I shouted joyously through my snorkel mask. What I felt in those moments of ecstasy was the same kind of bond I feel in the presence of dogs. The eye contact, the warmth and playfulness, and the curious intuition of interspecies connection made me feel inexpressibly alive.

And the craziest thing is that sharks are of no threat in New Zealand. Just dolphins. And don’t let the antics of these amicable creatures fool you because, much like New Zealand itself, dolphins most certainly are a threat. They may just melt your heart right there in your chest cavity.

Or you may fall in love with a supernatural place, a land far, far away–and never go home again.

—–

We’re well into November which means Thanksgiving is around the corner and cold weather is coming. For us here at MindBodyGreen Travel, this time of year also means that yoga retreat season is just about to get underway. Many of these retreats are gorgeous, eco-friendly, and are just what the doctor ordered to help you unwind and recharge. Think fruit smoothies, delicious organic food, and yoga with the likes of rock-star yogis such as Elena Brower, Kathryn Budig, David Romanelli, and Vinnie Marino. We’ll let the pictures do the talking as here are six awesome wellness destinations that you’ll want to check out this winter.

1) Xinalani Retreat, Mexico

Chosen by Yoga Journal as one of the “7 most spectacular spots to reconnect with your practice,” Xinalani Retreat is a new eco-chic refuge on a pristine beach surrounded by a lush jungle near Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. In addition to the daily yoga and meditation classes, and local vegetarian cuisine, Xinalani has its own private beach club! You can visit anytime you like, but you might want to check out rock-star yogi Vinnie Marino’s retreat in March or Kathryn Budig’s next November.

2) Mii Amo, Sedona, Arizona

Located in Sedona, Arizona, this world-class destination spa “leads guests on the ultimate journey of discovery into a heightened sense of balance, harmony and health.” If you’re a lover of yoga and food you’re in for a treat as David Romanelli takes his famous Yoga for Foodies to Mii Amo in early December.

3) Playa Viva, Mexico

Looking for a wellness path paved with yoga classes, delicious organic food, and maybe even a little surfing? Reset and recharge the mind body connection at the stunning Playa Viva eco-boutique hotel, 40 minutes outside of Zihuatenejo, Mexico. Playa Viva is serious about sustainability: the resort is 100 percent solar, recycles gray water for landscaping, and has restored its 200 acres to promote local biodiversity. This intimate beach resort (only 5 rooms) is committed to wellness and truly represents the mind, body, green connection.

4) Amansala Resort, Mexico

Yes, that Amansala in Mexico. Amansala has become a retreat hotspot and it’s no secret why. It’s absolutely gorgeous. Come February, Elena Brower and Christy Nones are bringing their rock-star yoga practices to the silky white sands and turquoise waters of Tulum with their 5-night ‘Ocean of the Heart’ retreat.

5) Rancho La Puerta, Mexico

An hour’s drive south of San Diego, Rancho La Puerta has “been making people healthy since 1940.” There’s truly something for everyone here as the 3,000 acre property has an organic farm, a world-renown spa, and fitness activities ranging from the Bar Method, to yoga, to cardio. It’s also a favorite destination of our friend, Dr Frank Lipman, the Integrative medicine pioneer who has worked with celebs like Gwyneth Paltrow Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Kevin Bacon.

6) Stay Human Retreat Center, Bali

For the first time in his career, the US president Barack Obama is visiting India for a three day tour. This is going to be the longest ever that a US President has stayed in a foreign country so far. While arrangements are on for his visit, the focus is more on his wife Michelle Obama.

It is heard that special arrangements are being made in Delhi for her and the highlight is that, she would be introduced to the most sought after ‘Kayakalpa’ ayurvedic massage. Some of the most potent herbs with high medicinal values are being brought for the first lady’s massage and the best experts in India would be attending to her.

Sources say that even Mrs Obama is looking forward to getting this massage done and feel rejuvenated. Some of the massage experts in Ayurveda say that after completing the session, the first lady who is 46 year old will begin to look 10 years younger and more energetic than before. Let us hope the wife of the most powerful man in the planet remembers India for a long time and for a good reason.

We are really excited about two amazing offerings that we are supporting going down over the next couple months in beautiful, amazing, and transformative land that is Costa Rica. One being our “Retreat to Paradise” in January at the luxurious Pranamar Villas with Alanna Kaivalya, and the other being the quickly approaching “200 hr Costa Rica Teacher Training and Lifestyle Immersion” with our dear friend and amazing teacher Angela Boltz that is starting at the end of this month at Montezuma Yoga.

It seems that Costa Rica is quickly becoming a hot spot for yoga-inspired travel and studies, with hundreds of Americans flocking to the breath-taking jungles and beautiful beaches of Costa Rica each year to immerse themselves in the Pura Vida spirit while delving deep into their practice. Fortunate enough for us, Angela Boltz is an OG on the Costa Rican block, and has been leading US based students on teacher trainings and lifestyle immersions for nearly half of a decade on the shores of Costa Rica. She has discovered, and since watched, the transformation of the Costa Rican yoga scene into what it is today and is grateful for all that the sacred Pura Vida land has taught her thus far. We were fortunate enough to catch up with Angela to discuss her some of her experiences and highlighted offerings in Costa Rica before she heads back down later this month.
YNON: Costa Rica is a quickly spreading “hot spot” for international teacher training programs and retreats and we know that you have been going down there for some time now…When did you first head down to Costa Rica?

AB: The first time I landed in Costa Rica was in 2003. It’s funny….I’m still not sure what got me on the that plane in the first place, all by myself with a backpack and a one-way ticket, but that decision has changed my life.

YNON: That’s usually the best way to travel! What went down on your first excursion? What was your experience like?

AB: You’re right. Most of my best memories have been born on a hunch and a whim. Right before I left the states, I started researching organic farms as potential stopping points along my trip. My first experience was on a beautiful property, Finca Ipe, located in the coastal rainforest outside of Playa Dominical. For about a month, I spent my days practicing and teaching yoga in nature while learning all that I could about living with simplicity and balance. Every day was different….one day we would harvest ginger and ylang-ylang to make essential oils, the next day spent delicately transplanting seedlings or assisting in the birth of newborn farm animals. It was an incredible experience and one of the times in my life when I felt most connected to all that I teach.

YNON: Awesome, nothing like the simple beauty of nature to connect us to our practice. What transitioned you from this experience into offering your TTs in Costa Rica? Why not do it stateside instead?

AB: The transition began as soon as I left the farm, actually! Upon the suggestion of some fellow travelers, I headed to the beach town of Santa Teresa…and as they say, the rest is history. I fell in love with the energy and pace of life there immediately, and my short layover turned into a month of camping beachside. Eight year’s later, this peninsula is still my second home and where I currently run all of my yoga programs. It was during this first visit that I was lucky enough to meet my dear friend Dagmar Spremberg, the owner and visionary of Montezuma Yoga Center…and the coolest woman ever! Our decision to eventually begin working together was a really natural progression—over the years our friendship grew, as did our love for yoga, and it was ON! I still get a cheesy smile when I think of the day we decided to run our first retreat together.

YNON: Awesome! And you have kept it going strong down there this whole time! I understand that you are about to head back for what will be your, what 3rd or 4th TT down there? Can you tell us a bit more about your next up-coming Costa Rican adventure?

AB: There’s yoga popping up all over the place on the Nicoya Peninsula, which is a beautiful thing! I’m happy to see this place I love turning into a yoga mecca! But Dagmar and I are the “old-heads” and have been holding down the fort for quite some time. We’ve done several retreats together, are holding our 3rd Yoga teacher training program this November and will start our 4th in mid-April. Personally, I can’t think of a better place to be part of a 21-day yoga immersion~as a teacher or student! The “pura vida” lifestyle IS yoga! Our program instructs yogis to take their practice to the next level and become teachers (and well, i might add), but the real magic is that this place offers students enough space to really see themselves. In that time, they learn the importance of quiet, of stepping back from life in order to listen, to hear what I needs to be heard, and that consistency in their practice will teach them more than I ever could. I believe deeply in the life-changing potential of this program, and in spiritual retreating in general, and will continue to teach here as long as I’m able.

YNON: That’s awesome Angela – wrapping this all up, what do you think is the biggest lesson that you have taken away from your experiences in CR?

AB: That yoga is not a rigid practice intended to be explored within the confines of four walls, but a dynamic lifestyle to be lived—full of richness and bold colors and soul-satisfying experiences. It’s always a reminder to live fully and with intention. Hari Aum.

YNON: Hari Aum!

The Trek Continues…

Today was rather uneventful in the traveling department as we needed just one day of no movement- and hanging out at the rest house was all but boring. We spent the day living the simple, relaxed mountain life. Very rejuvenating! I actually read a novel by one of my favorite authors – Robert Ludlum purchased on my new I-Pad and enjoyed watching the staff chase the local horse that would come trampling through the manicured lawn and eat the grass all day long.

Later that night we found out that a school in the adjacent village had fallen off the cliff due to heavy rains causing a mud slide … Om Namah Shivaya ~ 18 children died. This is all crazier then I could have ever imagined.

The journey continues. Due to heavy rain fall and tricky road conditions we had to abandon our plans for 2 intense treks in to the mountain that would put us away from any villages living in tents and living purely in nature. It was a bummer but if there’s anything I have learned in India is not to attach to plans, time and how you think things should go. This wonderful land teaches you that this moment is what you have and don’t waste it or wish for it to be different because if you do it will surely turn against you like a great big demon. So I surrendered and let Scott and Rakesh make plans for our last 4 days. We departed for the mountain town of Auli where there is a Ski Resort. I had vision of an Indian Squaw Valley … haha! That is humorous beyond. But Scott and I had a good time wishing and wondering what an Indian ski lodge looks like. Rakesh was excited as this area will offer grandiose views of many peaks and one in particular –Nanda Devi Peak which will be next year’s destination. It is also near Yoshimath a holy Vishnu temple is here and also close to Valley of Flowers and Bradinath. We are going further North very close to the China – Indian border and this was all to evident as we approached and noticed a considerable military presence, training mountaineering camps and stations.

At first, Rakesh suggested we stay in what he believed to be nice huts. Well the word hut already made me suspicious but I went along with it. At this point my high maintenance urban desires are somewhat diminished but just a slither of luxury like a clean room, no musty rugs is all I am asking for. The car could not make it all the way up to where the huts where and I felt this was a sign – on the outside they did not look very promising at all. Behind us I noticed that there was some sort of ski lodge hotel. This looked much more promising. So I took matters into my control and walked over to the hotel to check things out. Of course the outside always looks much fancier then the inside – I laughed knowing that this is typical of India … nice shiny outside but not so shiny on the inside. So in this large complex we settled in and literally are the ONLY people staying here. It rained all night ~ strong rains poured down. I prayed and prayed please let the sun shine through tomorrow morning.

The rain had subsided to a soft drizzle by early morning and eagerly I awoke to prepare to visit the small, not so ancient Hanuman temple that was a short hike up the mountain. As I walked outside I could see the peaks peering out over the horizon as the clouds rolled by past me. Thrilled to find myself all alone, not a priest or pilgrim in site I made my way in and sat before Hanuman in meditation and mantra. For the first time I was able to worship in private, in my very own temple. It was here I realized that I need Hanuman to blow the clouds away; He will surely rally to the cause. Oh Hanuman with you big heart and strong chest blow these clouds and rain North, far, far away.

At breakfast the sun started to come through and there was a glimmer of hope for us! Yes, maybe today will be a rain free day. I am an avid sun worshiper (Suryanarayan) and from there we all realized that Hanuman was the man and the Hanuman Chalisa was chanted full-on! We waited 2 hours for the sun to continue to break through and dry things up a bit so we could hike around this mountaintop.

We gathered ready for the climb and Rakesh brought a new device to help my trekking efforts … a walking stick. Hmm, I have never use a walking stick before. I am either concerned for what’s ahead or maybe this is just something to divert my attention.

The terrain was less then easy to maneuver, as it was wet, muddy and streams abundantly flowed in all directions. We were making our way to a meadow. Not sure where that was but I followed along. I soon realized the walking stick was going to be my savior from falling on the very muddy ground below me. A new epiphany about myself – I am clean FREAK! Really, I had no idea how obsessed I am about being neat and clean. I know some of you already had that figured out, but I amused myself trying not to muddy my pants and today of all days I had the brilliant idea of wearing my new keane’s as I knew there was water to negotiate. However, my mind never computed the mud that would enter through the openings. I grew increasingly frustrated by the fact that my feet were squishy and muddy and my wonderful bright orange be present pants were turning brown and yucky. I kept trying to be neat and pristine as I maneuvered each step but I soon realized my terrible neurosis and how it was really working against me.

So once again, I had to relinquish this control to be neat and pretty and surrender to nature and just be muddy and dirty. Through surrender I could release myself and be peaceful deep inside the forest where the trees, leaves, ferns were moist, vibrant with life. I found myself inside a fuzzy green forest wonderland, an enchanted forest: the lush foliage, the sounds so alive, earth grounding and cooling. We never made it all the way to the meadow as negotiating the non train was difficult at best and after two hours I knew the return would not be so amazing and my Pitta hunger was starting in and that in itself was not going to make for a happy descent back to home base. Satisfied with our adventure we turned around and headed back to our hotel and now it was already 3 pm and I was starving!

We are the only ones still in the hotel – comical and eerie at the same time – I had a bit of a meltdown when we returned and the staff had not gone to the market to pick up food supplies for our meals. Hungry, muddy, dirty, and tired does not make this Spa Girl happy at all! So I stomped off after sharing my frustation with everyone, allowed the hot water shower to pour over my body and searched for my emergency power bars. At that point, a very shaken and mortified Rakesh peered through my door and told me that the staff had magically conjured up some snacks and by tonight I would have all menu items available for ordering. I apologized for my deranged Pitta state but he understood and once I explained I was not mad at him at all – we were all best friends again.

*********************

Jai Hanuman – No rain!

A night rain free … we awoke with deep hopes and enthusiasm. Jai Hanuman! Today was our big sightseeing day of Yoshimath. I had no idea there were so many juicy temples to visit. After a small stroll down the very busy main street to browse in the local shops we began the temple tour.

Today is Monday, the day for Lord Shiva, and since August is also Shiva month it was a very important day in temple. It is also the last Monday that is celebrated within this holy month. Our first stop ShankaracharyaMath. This is a most important place as this is where the first Shankaracharya, Philosopher/Saint, lived in meditation as an incarnation of Lord Shiva. He is a revered figure and savior of Indian’s Sanatam Darsan.

We also visited a temple where the Sixth Incarnation of Vishnu as Narshima came to defeat a terrible Demon, Hirnyakashayap who was brutalizing the kingdom for worshiping anyone other then him. So at this very place it is said that Narshima defeated this demon. So it was here that I made my offerings to release that which is negative and destructive in my life that is leading me away from the path of Truth and Light. Afterwards we took a short drive further into the mountains to a natural sulfur spring and the hopes of seeing the famous Nanda Devi Peak(next year’s trekking site). It could have been semi-anti climactic but the drive as always was full of adventure. The short 10 km drive took us 40 minutes as we had to negotiate narrow passes and areas to heavy with mud from landslides that the car miraculously made it without begin stuck. There were workers busily trying to shovel (yes shovel) the 3 feet of mud that covered the road and huge boulders were being hacked with a pick axe … what could have taken 20 minutes in the US with heavy machinery will take days here with manual labor but as Rakesh pointed out this offers many work thats need and these machines as I put it would render many without work and so once again my Western impositions never serve anyone! Upon reaching the spring – there it was on the side of the road … very unassuming spewing out very hot water releasing steam hot and wide enough to give us all steam facials.

But that was not the magic for me … the magical part was that upon parking the car to see this natural wonder a rainbow formed just a few feet away. Clear as can be I could see both the beginning and end of the rainbow and as followed one end from the mountainside the other end fell into the Dhauli Ganga originating in Tibet.

This road ends in the mountain range separating Tibet and India, which is now China and why there is such a strong military presence due to the China’s constant attack and infiltration into the mountain range. China apparently is not happy enough to have massacred the Tibetans and taken their land as now they continue to push further into theHimalayan Mountain range. I could continue with all the rage and hate I have against China and their evil ways but I won’t mar this delightful blog. Rakesh told us that before the road and passage between India and Tibet was a very friendly border and one could easily just go back and forth but now all China wants to do is fight! No surprise there. The rainbow was breathtaking and a good omen of sunny days to come.

This morning we headed for another long hike up the mountain to areas that are unreachable once the Himalayan snows set in. We drove through the Kedarnath National Forest to reach our destination as our car weaved through precarious terrain I marveled at the pristine Himalyan forest all round me. We reached the customary chai stand at which our driver released us into what seemed to me the wild of the jungle. I don’t question much while here I just put my trust I God and Rakesh and follow along.

Truthfully I am not feeling so energized, I had no idea why I just felt so tired and winded and absolutely exhausted. The site that we are trekking to is one of the most revered sites by the great sages and Rishis beyond our time. This is the very place that Swami Rama’s guru left his body! Yet part of me just wants to give up within the first 10 steps. Here I am navigating a very muddy landscape, not trail in site just mud, streams and rocks and wondering how I am going to make this 12 km hike.

But alas! A rock trail appears upon the horizon – glorious. There are other pilgrims on this trail – but very few and not a dropping of shit or donkeys in sight to negotiate. Through the rain we continue and again this trail uphill was extremely strenuous. I could not understand, as I was not carrying a backpack, why my heart was beating wildly in my chest, lungs gasping for air and mind going wild with rage and disappointment. Am I this out of shape –really? Again, can’t the sun come out just for one second … please?

Steadily I persevered and learned a very important lesson: the heavier my thoughts the heavier the walk, the more internal resistance I cultivate the heavier my legs will feel. So be light, breathe steady and peacefully and allow your mind to be light … look around and see the beauty that surrounds you there is not other place like this in the world.

Upon reaching the top the rain increased and the last 20 steps were so steep that we decided to dry off inside one of the small chai tents and wait for the rain to subdue before making our offerings at the temple. As we sit I observe and ponder how these devotees just live here in the middle of the mountain – no running water, electricity, heat so simply and happy. Everyone literally blessed out. Is it the lack of oxygen, the hashish they like to smoke or just God crazy? They set up camp every year after the winter/snow season is over. They bring their cattle, set up homes , just to break it all down and head back down the mountain when the snow comes.

I also made friends with the cutest Himalayan dog ever. I really want to bring one of these dogs back with me as they are amazing and adorable. They wear collars with spikes on them to fight the leopards, foxes – you name it, to protect the sheep, cattle and themselves. They are fierce and endearing all at the same time. Unfortunately, I learn that bringing one home is not possible, as Rakesh told me they cannot survive in lower altitudes or hot weather – they just die. Oh so sad! This is their home and where they belong. Another lesson: you can’t deny culture and nature.

After temple puja and offerings guided by the local priest, we returned back to our chai stand and cooked pakora over an open fire and dried dried ourselves off before hiking back down. I later discovered (to my great relief) that I not totally out of shape, and my near heart attack/panic attack were completely normal – I had just hiked to over 16,000 feet! Oh I felt so much better about myself. Again, clueless to what I am signing up for, and surrendering one step at a time.

Please see below the 5th installment of Maria Garre’s Journey to India.

Kedarnath

My eyes could barely take in the beauty all around me upon waking. Since we arrived in the dark of the night I had no idea what magic lay around me. As I walked out all around us were snow-covered peaks: majestic, crisp and pristine. The early morning sun along with the hustle and bustle for morning puja melted all the pain away from my screaming thighs, knees and back. One look, one breath, and yesterday’s struggle was beyond worth it.

I don’t know if I would have appreciated the divine all around me if I had not endured the journey as I did the day before. Our plan was to continue further along the trail to Chorabar Lake – which was a very steep climb to 3900 meters.( approx. 13,000 feet), but upon inquiry and conversation, Rashek decided that it was too dangerous for us to continue onward for mudslides and snow avalanches were a strong possibility along the path. So we opted for a shorter trek, but equally beautiful site to a smaller, pure mountain lake. So after a nice morning bucket shower and abhyanga (a modified form) as one does not need to take care of the skin in these high elevations and I was not about to let Vata take over any more then it already had, we were ready to go.

The first few minutes of our uphill climb were difficult and I wondered if I was pushing my limits, but then I let my mind be light – no more thought – just breathe, feel, and look around. And all was good until a huge waterfall had descended on the path and the crossing over it looked beyond sketch. You know it’s time to worry when the both the guide and your mountain loving partner both take a LONG pause to survey the situation. So shoes come off and hand to hand we walk through resisting the strong pull of the glacier waterfall, making my feet numb and cramped. I realize from this point on that nothing will come easy – this trip is going to push every physical and mental limit to the max 108 times. As we approached the lake, which is really more like a pond, I noticed to my right the beginning of a glacier. And sure enough this was the glacier opening to the sacred Mandikini River of Kedarnath – water gushing out at full force – fierce and strong.

After our nice picnic the monsoon clouds once again quickly began to move in and we packed our bags to walk back before once again being caught in the rain while trekking. I was so happy, warm, and dry that the last thing I wanted to invite into this experience were the qualities of cold and damp upon my skin. We retuned just in time as the sky released another monsoon downpour that we listened and watched with a cup of warm chai around our hands.

Later that afternoon with little to do (a real luxury in my life) we pondered upon how to occupy our non-busy selves as both Scott and I laughed at the idea! Is this really happening … time on our hands. Really?

We borrowed a deck of cards from the kitchen staff, used Prasad candy as chips and introduced our Rashek to the wonderful world of Blackjack. I played the role of dealer and beginner’s luck would have it he cleaned both Scott and house out of all our candy. He’s addicted. I think he’s a card shark. Scott was incredulous he’d lost. He hates to loose – I’m glad someone else is experiencing some mental breakthroughs.

****************************

Descend to Kedarnath – Travel to Ukhimath

After morning puja at Kedarnath Temple, breakfast and another wonderful warm bucket shower we packed up our things and proceeded down the mountain. During breakfast I asked Scott what his deal was all night: he was up and down, up and down. I, half asleep, kept asking him what he was doing and his reply was bathroom…

Well turns out we had a visitor in our room – a Himalayan mouse. I wish I had a picture of these creatures as I was fortunate enough to see one on the way down. They are quite large, pointed ears, no tail and very round. They are cute and quite docile. All night one visited our room in and out … in and out. He was taunting and teasing Scott and brave enough to jump on the night stand 6 feet from my head. I thank the goddess I am a heavy sleeper – or I would have freaked to have this creature jump inside my sleeping for Scott feared that was where he was headed. Turned out after struggling half the night, Scott figured out he was after our Prasad-Poker chip candy. Go figure.

The descent was so much more agreeable then the climb up. Om Namah Shivaya. And all our prayers paid off because as we reached the bottom the sky roared and a strong rainfall was upon us – but we were safe inside the car.

We stopped for lunch at Sonprayag which is where I received my first chapatti making lesson and was able to watch closely how these simple and delicious meals are prepared. What I love of this land is that you eat what the land offers. So if it does not grow locally you don’t eat. Can’t really ask for broccoli in my mixed vegetable rice or cauliflower … “no not possible now, not in season” is the common response. Love it! This is truly locally grown only communities.

The next, most astonishing part of all this is that not once since this trip has started have I seen a single woman cooking. Everywhere we go the men are working the kitchen and doing all the house cleaning. It is quite extraordinary and hopeful for mankind worldwide!

The four-hour car ride to Ukimath was typical and spectacular. The roads are basically cut along the side of the mountain so you have the mountain to one side and a deep valley to the other with the river running along side. These single-lane roads are why it is so dangerous to travel during monsoon season and after 8pm (which we never do) as mud landslides are a commonality and all it takes is one landslide to shut down the road for hours or days and you are just stuck on the other side. And the huge trucks that fly around each corner without regard to who may be on the other side of the turn is even more disturbing. I am so thankful our driver offered thanks to the divine at every near death collision. His hands to his heart, third eyes, right ear, left ear. The common mudra dance to the divine spirit.

By the time we arrived at the GMV (government) Guest House it was dinnertime and great news. When we have power, and hot water! This was a delight as this is now base camp for the next three nights.

Trek to Kedarnath

We began around 2:30 pm – eager, anxious and full of excitement to the journey that is ahead. I was pleasantly surprised to find a rock paved trail but more then disgusted by the amount of donkey, cow and sheep shit that lined the trail. At first I was so careful, step by step avoiding as much shit as I could and now I am renaming this “the shit trail to Kedarnath”. I wish I could report that it was pure bliss up the mountain but that would be a terrible lie.

I suffered in so many ways and struggled and wanted to give up, turn around, hop on a donkey, hire a Sherpa, you name it. It actually amazed me how many Indians where either on a mule ….. or wait, were being carried by four very small Nepalanese men in what is a chariot of sorts. It is literally the most interesting I have ever seen. If you can imagine walking straight uphill for at least six hours carrying some fat Indian woman or man on this chariot as they just sit back and enjoy the view. If I was not already agitated this sent me over the top. And I thought I had it hard. They were my source of inspiration. Rashek later told us they make “good money” and every year come from the Nepal for the Yatra season. I thought to myself “good money” – are you kidding me you could not pay me enough to do that … I would not subject myself to that misery for even one million dollars – no joke. I am weak.

But I kept walking step by step. Scott was sure that at some moment I would pass him on a horse! Or at least with a Sherpa by my side. In the rain, through the shit, dodging donkeys, horses, sherpas, cows and other pilgrims coming down and going up I weaved through the obstacles physical and mental. At points I wanted to cry, scream out – why, why does it have to rain, why is it so cold, why is this trail so nasty? At times I was just angry – I’ve traveled so far, taken sacred time off to vacation and visit one of the holiest shrines on the planet and this is what I get? But then I put myself in check, your life is much too comfortable and you’ve forgotten what’s it is like to really struggle yet let your heart be full of joy. So, I return to my chanting “om namah shivaya” … I listen to the pilgrims pass by and offer encouragement calling out “bole, bole” (another name for Shiva). As the only westerner, along with Scott, to walk this trail everyone smiled and greeted us with joy and hospitality.

At the very top (3500 meters/11, 482 feet), soaked and numb from the cold in the dark of the night we arrived just in time as I could barely walk anymore. With our guide, we found a place to stay and it seemed like a five star hotel at that point and when the hot bucket of water came it was like nectar on my skin. After a warm meal we headed straight to bed, deep inside my sleeping bag, I climbed in, zipped up was in deep REM within minutes hoping that the million mosquitoes and other unknown bugs would not make me their midnight snack. I prayed.
